Agriculture blog going fallow

I had hoped that we might be able to utilize this blog, once our original site got back up and running, to offer another angle on agriculture blogging.

Perhaps some day we may be able too, if we get more team members contributing from the Capital Press staff. However, for now, our current team members have their hands full producing our regular weekly paper, periodic special section, our primary Blogriculture site, a podcast and other duties.

So, for now, we will leave the site as it is, but we don't anticipate any new posts for the foreseeable future. If we do start posting here again, we'll post some sort of announcement on the main Blogriculture site.

In the meantime, this will be fallow ground.

Can a parent have a favorite child?

Our original blog is back up and running. The technical problems we were having on the Blogriculture site have been fixed by the folks at Blogger.

It's nice to have the original site back. Even during our down time at Blogriculture, we were still getting visitors based on the content of are archive posts and the different material people were searching for.

It's been a big more difficult to build traffic here because there are fewer posts and fewer links to this site.

But I have to admit, I'm a little sad, I'm not quite sure what will happen to this site now. Will it evolve into something else? Will our team continue to make posts here?

It's still too early to say.

It's nice to know our first child is alive, well and nursed back to health. But will second board now be neglected?

Surprised, but glad.

I've spent much of this week, off and on, trying to figure out what's wrong with our primary blog site. We started the process to migrate to the new version of Blogger. It has not gone well.

We have been unable to create, save and publish any new posts since Wednesday. So, until that gets sorted out and corrected, this will be our new blogging headquarters for the Capital Press.

Beyond all that mess, I have to admit I'm not too motivated to be working today. The year is about over. My alma mater, Oregon State, is playing in a college football bowl game today. And I am behind schedule on creating, editing and posting a new podcast.

I am interested to see what will happen with the FDA's announcement yesterday that food from cloned livestock would be safe to eat. Now there's a 90-day comment period on the documents FDA compiled on the issue. I expect a lot of foot stomping and tooth gnashing over that issue.

Is cloning a viable option for livestock producers to use regularly in managing their herds? Should it be? Is it just the next high-tech evolution of artificial insemination? Are there ethical worries in cloning animal for food? For any purpose?

It's gonna get interesting. What do you think?
